Too Cute Tuesday: Splash Day at Day Nursery Ruth A. Lilly Center

While today’s a bit cloudy, the children at the Day Nursery Ruth A. Lilly Center on Central Avenue have had many beautiful days this month to enjoy their newly remodeled playground.  In their early years, children explore the world around them by using all their senses (touching, tasting, listening, smelling, and looking) and splash day offers many opportunities to explore and pretend.

These “Too Cute Tuesday” pictures feature a recent playground splash day on the playground designed just for infants and toddlers.

Day Nursery Northwest Indianapolis shares culture with preschool in Australia

Day Nursery Northwest culture swapMiss Shanna’s class at Day Nursery Northwest is in a “culture swap” with Holy Trinity Early Learning Center in Australia. Shanna shared this picture today of her showing her class the contents of the package from their friends in Australia which included an Australian flag, some stuffed koalas, stickers and a poster of Australian wildlife. They also received letters and pictures from the children at the center. In exchange, Shanna’s class sent them some handmade fun dough made by the class, a Colts jersey, crayons, some Day Nursery pencils, checkered flags, and some pictures they colored.

Day Nursery Federal Center preschoolers enjoy Indy St. Paddy’s Day parade

They marched with the bands, held their ears when the fire trucks blasted their sirens, waved to Ronald McDonald and whirled in delight at the sound of the bagpipes.

Having a front row seat for the Indianapolis St. Patrick’s Day parade is just one of the benefits of attending preschool downtown at the Day Nursery Federal Center.  Give them a call and enroll your child now and we can guarantee you a great seat for next year’s parade! Happy St. Patrick’s Day!IMG_20130315_121432

The Toddler 3 class at the Day Nursery Federal Center  made “hot” chocolate to warm up on a chilly day, pouring their own warm water and stirring it up, and the best part was of course tasting it!   Thanks to teacher, Ms. Kesha and Center Director Sarah Parks for sharing these pictures!

Igloo is cozy space for Day Nursery preschoolers

The thermometer outside the classroom reads 32 degrees, but inside Sara McHenry’s and Caroline  King’s classroom at the Day Nursery Ruth A. Lilly Center, it is toasty warm inside their igloo constructed out of empty milk jugs.  The igloo sits next to a large window facing the playground so it gets lots of soft light which makes it a perfect place for snuggling up with a good book.  It is also a place that is designated for “me” time, so if a student wants to get away from the preschool crowd for a while, they can move to the igloo and read quietly, knowing that the space is their own. Ms. Sara and Ms. Caroline have plans to work their igloo into a preschool math lesson, challenging the children to count the number of milk containers it took to build it as well as observe how many colors make up the caps on the bottles and count how many there are of each color.

Stone Soup provides Day Nursery preschoolers a delicious opportunity for learning

January is National Soup Month, and Ms Tomi and Ms. Jannel’s preschool class at our IU Health Center read the story ‘Stone Soup’ with the children, a story about working together for a common goal and the ‘magic’ that can bring to a person/group/community. The children then made the soup together, discussing math skills in measurement and cutting. The children then sat together to eat the soup for snack, this gave them the opportunity to build language skills and build relationships with their peers. Thanks to Assistant Center Director Amy Cavin for sharing this great learning experience!

Day Nursery IU Health Center celebrates Blue Friday

colts 011The staff at the Day Nursery IU Health Early Care and Education Center used yesterday’s Blue Friday as an opportunity to reinforce skills that children need to be successful in elementary school.  Students in Ms. Lee Ann Kidwell‘s preschool classroom had an opportunity to make two items decorated in the team colors of the Indianapolis Colts.  Activities such as makign friendship bracelets and decorating pine cones help develop fine motor skills as well as teach children to follow directions, take turns and to follow and repeat patterns.

Day Nursery Indianapolis

The building of fine motor skills in children will enable them to perform a variety of important functional tasks including tying shoes, zipping and unzipping, writing legibly and without significant muscle fatigue, playing games that require precise hand and finger control and drawing, painting, and coloring.

Thanks to Center Director Charity Jablonski for sharing these pictures.
