Day Nursery prepares for severe weather season

Infants in evacuation cribs during Severe Weather Preparedness Drill

During last year's drill at the Day Nursery Federal Center, the teachers quickly rolled the infants into an interior restroom which is a short ride from their classroom.

The staff and children of all the Day Nursery centers will be participating in a drill this morning as part of Severe Weather Preparedness Week. Across Indianapolis, the American Red Cross will join the National Weather Service, the Indiana Department of Homeland Security, Indiana State Police, Indiana Department of Education, the Indiana Broadcasters Association, and the amateur radio community  to remind our community the importance of being prepared for the rough weather that often makes it way into our state during the spring. Did you know that Indiana averages 23 tornadoes a year? Activities for Severe Weather Preparedness Week include the 32nd annual statewide test tornado drill this morning between 10:15 a.m. and 10:30 a.m EDT. A second drill will occur tonight between 7:30 p.m. and 7:45 p.m.  Thursday March 18 is the make-up drill day if weather postpones today’s drill. Safety experts say these drills and communication tests should be used as times to practice a home or workplace disaster plan. Deanna Saylor, Assistant Director of the Day Nursery Clarian Center says the children are used to the monthly fire drills in the center so today’s practice won’t be too much of a concern to them, although they don’t like the sirens.  I am sure there are a few adults who feel the same way.
